Solar PV plant commissioning is the verification step that separates a plant that generates on paper from one that performs for 25 years. Utility-scale and commercial solar projects concentrate thousands of connections, hundreds of strings and dozens of inverters plus a medium voltage collection system and substation – every one a potential energy loss or safety hazard if not verified. Tecnvolt performs solar commissioning and testing aligned with IEC 62446 practice and ANSI/NETA ATS for the MV balance of system.
DC side verification
String-level testing proves the array before energization: open-circuit voltage and polarity per string (reversed strings are a classic construction error), short-circuit or operating current comparison, insulation resistance of DC cabling, and continuity of grounding and bonding. Thermography after energization locates hot spots, bypass diode failures and connector defects across the array – defects that silently cost energy for years if not caught at commissioning.
AC side and MV collection system
The inverter output, transformers and MV collection network are verified with the full substation test portfolio: VLF testing of MV collection cables, transformer testing of inverter step-up and substation units, switchgear and protection testing including grid-code functions, and grounding verification across the plant. The interconnection substation is commissioned per ANSI/NETA ATS with a documented energization plan.

Performance and documentation
Commissioning closes with functional testing of plant control, verification of monitoring and communications, and a documentation dossier: test records per string, inverter and MV asset, punch list by severity, as-built settings, and the evidence package required by lenders, insurers and off-takers. Well-documented commissioning directly protects the project financial model – underperformance found at year 2 is a dispute; found at commissioning, it is a warranty claim.
Operational plants
For plants already in service, the same portfolio supports periodic condition assessment: thermography of arrays and switchgear, MV cable diagnostics of collection circuits (a leading cause of mature-plant downtime), transformer condition testing and grounding audits – prioritized by production impact.

Why Tecnvolt
Tecnvolt has commissioned and tested solar plants and their MV infrastructure in Brazil since the growth of the sector, combining PV-specific verification with deep substation and cable testing practice up to 500 kV. ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certified.
Frequently asked questions
Do you test at string or module level? Commissioning verification is normally at string level, with module-level investigation where anomalies appear – the efficient balance between coverage and cost.
Can commissioning run in phases? Yes – block-by-block commissioning matched to construction progress is standard on large sites and shortens the path to first energization.
What about repowering and retrofits? The same verification portfolio applies – with special attention to mixed legacy and new equipment interfaces and updated protection settings.
